Lamu Beach Escape

Kenya's most beautiful island, and one of the last places on the Swahili coast that still feels like itself. Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage town built from coral stone and mangrove timber, where donkeys outnumber cars, the streets are too narrow for engines and the Indian Ocean breeze does the rest. The old town has been continuously inhabited for over 700 years and carries that weight lightly — mosques, merchant houses, carved wooden doors and a waterfront dhow harbour that has barely changed since the 14th century. This is a four-day escape that combines the stillness of the island with everything the archipelago offers beyond it. Dhow sailing to Manda and Pate islands, snorkelling the reef, a guided walk through Lamu Old Town, a seafood dinner on the rooftop and long afternoons on Shela Beach with nothing pressing. The pace is the point. Our guides are Lamu-born and know this archipelago the way most people know their own neighbourhood. They know which dhow captain reads the wind best, which kitchen serves the finest pilau, and which alley leads to the door carver who has been working the same workshop for forty years.
