KARURA HIKE AND CYCLING

Nairobi's most accessible outdoor day. Karura Forest stretches across 1,000 hectares of indigenous riverine woodland right inside the city — a rare place where the noise of the capital dissolves into birdsong, waterfalls and cool shade within minutes of the gate.

The trail and cycling network covers over 30 kilometres of marked paths that wind past the Karura and Gitathuru rivers, two waterfalls, caves, and a bamboo grove dense enough to block the afternoon sun. Hikers typically cover 10–15 kilometres in 3–4 hours; cyclists can extend the same ground in half the time and push further into the quieter, less-visited northern sections. Expect red murram trails, short rocky descents, and the occasional muddy crossing after rain — nothing technical, but enough to keep it interesting.

Whether you are on foot or on a bike, we set a pace that lets you notice things — the Hartlaub's turaco perched overhead, the fig trees strangling their hosts, the guerrilla sculpture garden hidden along the Karura River path.
